Busting myths around Autistic play - AUsome

There’s a common misconception about Autistic children and play: that certain kinds of play, like lining up toys, sorting objects by colour or size, or repeating the same game over and over, are something to worry about or correct. Often these behaviours get labelled a “problem” and children are sent for therapy to stop doing them.

But that’s not what’s actually happening. Play like this is how many Autistic children make sense of the world, the same way all children use play to process and understand their environment. Rather than being celebrated as a normal and valuable part of childhood, it’s too often pathologised, with parents encouraged to worry that their child “may be Autistic” instead of simply accepting and celebrating who their child is.

Why lining things up feels good

Lining things up, sorting, and creating order is something humans do everywhere: schools line up in single file, supermarkets organise aisles and shelves, armies march in formation. Order and predictability help us feel safe, because we know where things are and how they’ll be. For many Autistic people, that need for order can be stronger, often connected to how anxiety is experienced day to day. Seen this way, lining up toys isn’t a symptom to be corrected. It’s a completely understandable way of creating calm and predictability in a world that can otherwise feel chaotic and overwhelming.

What parents can do instead

Rather than treating this kind of play as a warning sign, it helps to see it for what it is: a child’s own way of self-regulating and understanding their environment. Parents who notice their child playing this way don’t need to panic or rush to “fix” it. The most helpful thing a parent can do is accept their child as they are, and give them the space to play in the way that works for them.
